01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Down an alley in Yanagibashi, where echoes of Tokyo’s historic geisha quarter still linger, a gate and a stone path lead to the traditional wooden house of lucite cafe. The ground floor functions as a gallery displaying artistic pieces; visitors order and pay here before making their way up to the cafe on the second floor. From the riverside windows and open terrace, the waters of the Sumida River unfold broad and wide, offering quiet views of passing riverboats and Sobu Line trains crossing the distant iron bridge.
The cafe menu features sweets and teas chosen to suit the calm, reflective surroundings. Cake sets allow a choice between cheesecake and almond cake, served on handsome tableware and paired with drip coffee, iced coffee, or other drinks. Tea-focused drinks also take centre stage, including an authentic matcha set served with a seasonal confection, fragrant roasted green tea lattes, and matcha banana lattes.
For something savoury, options include a gluten-free savoury cake made with rice flour, chicken, king oyster mushrooms, and ginger, alongside simple pasta and light bites. With Ebisu draft beer and wine on hand, enjoying a quiet drink while catching the evening breeze off the river makes for a memorable stop.
Because of the historic structure of the building, the stairs up to the second floor are steep, and the venue cannot accommodate wheelchairs. Operating schedules can also shift around gallery exhibitions, making it wise to check the calendar before heading out.
